I agree. I find that is happening in our little farmer's market circle of acquaintances, in a very organic way. I need healthy soap. Al needs healthy breads and meat. Al makes healthy soap. I make breads and raise meat. We both live on very modest income and can't afford to really buy those ingredients at the local coop. So we trade. Donna makes great cookies and raises veggies that I don't. Martha grows sweet potatoes! I have milk.

The problem is getting people aware of the different resources and getting those same people to be willing to think/operate outside the money box. COMMUNITY is the keyword for me. We all need community for so many reasons. Dealing with the type of community where we all trade, share, and spend our hard cash when we have it is going to make our lives truly sustainable in shaky economic times. As uncomfortable as this stock market plunge has been for our family, I am grateful for it, because it has forced the issue of living in community. Yeay!

BTW, we miss seeing you. We were talking about you last night, and hoping that you are getting your Peasant Fare project going in your new local. Wish I could drop by some milk as a housewarming(garage warming?) gift. May the new year bring some major breakthroughs in your family.

PS did Zio Gatto make the transition well? Do you miss the chickens terribly?

While you may not want to grow your own maple syrup in Virginia, you can support those who do in Highland Grayson (Whitetop Mountain) Counties. (There may be more areas, but I've used both of these personally.) BTW, found your site because of your endeavors w. my friend Elaine Fleck.
